South Hills Cal Ripken and BAbe Ruth Teams

South Hills Cal Ripken Team

The South Hills Cal Ripken 8U, 10U and 12U teams will participate in the Cal Ripken league.  These teams will be comprised of the South Hill area's best participating players and will compete in travel games, local tournaments and possibly the Cal Ripken World Series tournament trail.  For the World Series tournament trail, play will start with the district tournament and if advance they will compete in the state and regional tournaments, with the last stop being the Cal Ripken World Series.

Tryout registration is now open for the 2020 10U South Hills Cal Ripken team.  To register for the tryout, please create an account on this site (top right) and then go to the Registration tab and click on "Available Programs".

South Hills Babe Ruth Team

BWAA's Pony and Colt teams will participate in the Babe Ruth league.  Like the Cal Ripken process stated above, these teams will also be comprised of the areas best participating players and will participate in the World Series tournament trail.  Play will start with the district tournament and if advance they will compete in the state and regional tournaments, with the last stop being the Babe Ruth World Series.

Eligibility Requirements for the South Hills Cal Ripken and South Hills Babe Ruth teams:

- Child must be within the age limit on April 30, 2020 for the division for which they are registered.
- Child must either be a participant of Baldwin Whitehall Athletic Association or another South Hills community recreational league.
- Child must attend and participate in team tryout.

*Players who are on other AAU or travel club team are permitted to tryout and participate as a member of the team, if selected.  We just ask that you consider the schedules of those other teams and take your child's ability to commit to this team into consideration before tryouts.

Travel/Tournament Teams

The travel teams are made up of BWAA kids from each age division (10U through Colt) and these teams compete against the travel teams of other local communities.  These games will be in addition to the regular in-house games and travel games typically take place on Sundays.  The travel team season coincides with the spring season and typically at the end of the season, there is a championship tournament that takes place to determine first and second place team in the league.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will these opportunities cost the parents?
BWAA funds the tournament entry fees and uniform costs for all opportunities but does require that parents participate in fundraising events such as selling extra raffle tickets, going to Night at the Races event, etc. during the season.

How are the players selected for these teams?
These teams are selected based on player performance and are evaluated by the head and assistant coaches for their respective age division.

Will there be different uniforms from what is worn for the in-house league?
Yes, the travel and tournament teams will have a second set of uniforms in addition to their in-house shirts.

Will there be extra practices if my child is selected on these teams?
Yes.  Since these teams will be more competitive than the regular in-house league, these teams will also have separate practices in addition to their in-house team practices.  In order for BWAA to be successful in these different opportunities, we do ask for committed and dedicated players and families.

Can my child play on these teams in addition to an outside travel (AAU type) league?
Yes, BWAA encourages athlete development and recognizes that some families may choose to have their child play in an outside league as well as with BWAA.  This will not prevent your child from being selected for a travel or tournament team.

All Star Teams

All-Star teams will be formed for age division 8U and up and these teams will compete in local area all-star tournaments during the month of July.  Typically, each team competes in 3 different tournaments and the tournaments are selected by the head coach of each division.  The players on the All-Star teams are selected based on their performance during the spring season.

Citi Sports

BWAA's 12U team competes in the Mayor's Cup tournament after the regular recreational season, this tournament is sponsored by the Citi League Sports league.  This tournament is a single elimination tournament and the championship game is held at PNC Park.  Each team that wins brings home the Mayor's Cup to their community.

BWAA's Pony and Colt teams will participate in the Citi Sports league during the spring season and compete against other Citi Sports baseball teams.  Like the 12U team, these teams will also compete in the Mayor's Cup tournament, with a chance to bring the Mayor's Cup to BWAA for their respective age divisions.
